LOOKOUT arose in 2014 in response to the trauma suffered by a number of people in Healesville, Victoria. People from the parish of St Brigid were joined by others concerned for the safety of children in the town. The abuse which had occurred at the catholic parish was seen to have a lasting impact on the immediate victims, on their families, on the parish community and on the whole town.
The group meets monthly, on the fourth Monday, 1.00 to 3.00 pm., at Golden Wattle House, Joffre Street, Healesville, thanks to the generosity of ECASA.
Meetings normally last for two hours. The format provides for a time of quiet for sharing the pain and distress of those who have been affected by this scourge of abuse, for reflection and prayer. This is an important time for members to listen to sometimes harrowing accounts and to share the pain of victims and their families.
Some formal presentation or discussion follows. The aim is to help members grow in understanding the scourge of child abuse, its prevalence in society in general and its long-lasting effects.
The group sees its mission as raising awareness in the town and taking practical steps to ensure the safety of children in all circumstances.
